Just as we have our own New Year traditions...first footing, Auld Lang Syne etc, so other countries have their traditions too.
The Germans have a rather bizarre tradition of watching an ancient English black and white film called "Dinner for One" about a rich elderly lady (Miss Sophie) who, on her 90th birthday, invites all of her friends to dinner. Naturally, because she is getting older, her friends are dying off but, not wanting his mistress to be upset, the butler pretend that all of her friends are still there by eating and drinking all of their food and wine. Naturally things become quite chaotic after a time, with the catchphrase "the same proceedure as last year" being said. Find out more about "Dinner for One" by following this link:
Dinner for One - A German New Year's Tradition
In France on the 6th January, they celebrate Epiphany or the "Fête des Rois", when the eat a pie, or
Galette des Rois, that has a "Fève" in it (a small china model). Whoever gets that in their piece of pie gets to be king or queen for the rest of the day and wear a crown and set the rules for the day. Just for the record, I got to be Queen in my house today and won a "Black Pearl" fève from our Pirates of the Caribbean Galette that we ate! I'm quite enjoying being Queen at the moment :o)
